Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Streaming Movies and Videos

For many Black girls raised in the suburbs, the experiences of going to school, playing on the playground, and living day-to-day life can be uniquely alienating. Black Girl in Suburbia looks at the suburbs of America from the perspective of women of color. Filmmaker Melissa Lowery shares her own childhood memories of navigating racial expectations both subtle and overt - including questions like, "Hey, I just saw a Black guy walking down the street; is that your cousin?" Through conversations with her own daughters, with teachers and scholars who are experts in the personal impacts of growing up a person of color in a predominately white place, this film explores the conflicts that many black girls in homogeneous hometowns have in relating to both white and Black communities.

After nearly four decades together, Ben and George finally tie the knot. But when George loses his job, the couple must sell their apartment and temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. George moves in with two friends while Ben ends up across town with his nephew, his wife and their teenage son with whom Ben shares a bunk bed. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements. LOVE IS STRANGE depicts the delicate nature of two people building a long life together and their love growing deeper and richer with time.

The story captures the ideas of the Bengali Renaissance of the 1930s and '40s. A group of young intellectuals and revolutionaries, led by the brilliant Indranath, is fighting for independence from the colonial system. Ela, the group's emancipated muse and teacher, is troubled by her romantic love for the poet Atin, who is drawn into the movement for his love for her. Atin doubts the cruelty of revolutionary acts sanctioned by Indranath's ideals. This film has inter-woven politics and love story in a superb manner.

Filmmaker Attiya Khan was 16 when she dated Steve. Now, two decades later, here they are again, sitting across from each other, not to reminisce but to process. In a powerful act of restorative justice, they've come together to talk through their violent relationship. What drove Steve to abuse Attiya daily during the two years they were together? Illuminating a new paradigm for domestic-violence prevention, A Better Man offers a fresh and nuanced look at the healing and revelation that can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their abuse.
