Library Technology Guide: Audiobooks Through Libby

Finding Audiobooks Through the Library Catalog

You can search for audiobooks in the library catalog. Using the "advanced search" option will allow you to filter your results to focus on audiobook resources. The advanced search option is located to the right of the search bar in the catalog.

After you pull up the advanced search menu, change the material type to the audio filter. This will filter your results to show audiobooks only.

Once you find an interesting result you can access the audio file by clicking the link under full text availability. This will take you the Virginia Community College system's overdrive repository where you can "borrow" the audiobook and listen on your laptop. You may need to login to your myBRCC account to access media. For more information on signing into your myBRCC account see our Off-Campus Access guide.

For more information about Libby, including getting started, or troubleshooting the app, check out the Libby Help page.

1. Find Libby in the app store and download. Answer yes when prompted "do you have a library card?"
2. Click "Search For A Library" and search for “Virginia Community College System.”

3. Follow the prompts to sign in. Allow Libby to sign in using overdrive.com. The link will redirect and bring up the myBRCC login page. Login using your myBRCC credentials. If you have set up multi-factor authentication, follow your normal multi-factor authentication process.

4. The app will process your credentials and add a VCCS library card to your account. If you have a library card through another institution, such as your local public library, you may also add that institution to your account by tapping the center menu icon and following the prompts to "Add Library." You will need your library card id (usually the barcode on the card) to add another library account to your Libby profile. Adding another library card to your account will allow the app to search through all your libraries' holdings for audio materials.

5. You are now able to borrow audiobooks through Libby! You use Libby's built-in filters to browse by popularity, release dates, and topics. Or, if you know exactly what you want, you can search by title, author, subject, or series.

6. When you are ready to borrow a book, click on the title you want, tap "Borrow." If you have multiple library cards, the app will bring up your options for borrowing the material, and you can choose whichever option works better for you. If a book is not available, you may place a hold on it to be notified when it is available. When you borrow a book, the app will tell you how long your circulation period is. You may check out multiple audiobooks at one time.

7. Tap the book icon on the bottom menu to open your "Shelf" and access your audiobooks. To access audio controls tap "Open Audiobook." When you are finished with an audiobook, you can return it by tapping "Manage Loan" and follow the prompts to return the material. You can also return books using the "Timeline" feature accessed by tapping the clock icon in the bottom right corner of the menu. Once you hit return the book will be removed from your "Shelf."

Using Filters in Libby

If you are unsure what exactly you want to read, you can use Libby's filters to browse through collection materials. You can filter by subjects and genre, as well as format, audience, and language.
