ENG 112 -- Thompson: Gale Literature

Gale Literature

Finding Literary Criticism in Gale Literary Sources

This is the search box for Gale Literature. You can search by author or by the work you are researching. When you begin to type in the box, it will complete it for you.

When I began to type in "Ralph Ellison", the database filled in the author's full name: Ralph Waldo Ellison. This ensures that I get all of the results for the author that the database has.

When I began to type in Invisible Man, the database filled in the novel's title, and specified it was the novel by Ralph Ellison.

This is a screen of results. Make sure you are on the Literature Criticism tab so you are using appropriate material for your assignment! You will also see limiter options for full-text and peer-review on the right hand side of the page. Check the box for Full Text (this eliminates all the results you don't have access to) and Peer Reviewed (only gives articles that are peer reviewed).

If you want to look for something specific in your results, such as the word racism in articles about Invisible Man, click on the "Search Within" tab and enter the term you are searching for.

This is an example of a record you will find in Gale Literature. On the upper right hand side, you will see the following options: cite (beware of the results you get), send to (email to yourself), download and print. You will also see a link option. This is the permalink - remember to never use the link in your internet browser because it will not work when you go back to access the article. Always use the permalink.
